Snowman Day!

We celebrated snowman day and had all sorts of snowman fun! We spent the day reading snowman books, doing snowman work, and making snowman art...

We started off with the book Sneezy the Snowman by Maureen Wright.

If you haven't read it, Sneezy is one cold snowman that tries to get warm, but has terrible luck (hopping in the hot tub, standing by the fire etc..) until his friends give him some better ways to get warm. It's a fun story with rhyming and some repetitive lines that allow for kids to chime in! All in all the kids liked it, could easily do a retell of it and were able to make text to self connections.

After we responded to the story by thinking of different ways to get warm than those in the story. This kids had some great answers, I was totally impressed. We took our ideas of how to get warm and put them with some snowman art. The girls did purple hats and the boys blue.

When I need to get warm I get under my warm blanket.
When I need to get warm I get in the bed and turn on the music.
Later we did snowman soup! Have you had that stuff? Delicious! I swapped out normal hot chocolate for white hot chocolate that I found at Safeway. It went over great as "melted snow" :) Each kiddo got the ingredients for the soup on a plate and one cup of snow. Then we read through the recipe together and added them one step at a time altogether. I wish I had taken more pics, but you know how that goes!

1 candy cane, 10 mini marshmallows, and two Hershey's kisses
The one pic I managed to snap, with all of ingredients added the kiddos are happily mixing their soup!
After we enjoyed our soup we determined weather or not we liked it and did a classroom vote. All but 1 child enjoyed the drink. Then we completed a tally graph and analyze page ( a favorite of mine to do). Click the pic to get your copy!

Also... Here are the recipe pages: I projected the larger one as we mixed our soup and I let the kids take a mini one home with them to tell their parents all about it! Click the pics to download and thanks scrappindoodles.com for the fun clip art!

Finally we made our snowman ornament thanks to the cute idea from A Cupcake for the Teacher. I did all of the hot gluing, the kiddos stuck on the snowman parts and drew on the eyes and mouth. Love them!

Snowman day was a blast! If you do one too don't forget to check out my other snowman stuff here!

See you soon :)

Holiday Hoopla! and freebies!

Yes... I still have one more week of school! Ahh! My kids are going bonkers, yesterday they were at recess chanting "9 more days till Christmas!" Can I just say next week will be VERY interesting...

To keep them interested I have been doing a bunch of  holiday hoopla! And thanks to some great ideas in bloggy word I have been able to do some great activities! This week we did a version of Cara Caroll's Elf Application. But we used Jan Brett's The Wild Christmas Reindeer and I changed the app to fit hiring an elf to "ready the reindeer"

yes... world instead of would, we're working on that :)
This next week I am super excited to do our Mouse to the Movies day (another Cara inspiration). I put together a couple of workshop worksheets to go along with our book; a long a word sort, independent cause and effect and a response writing page. Click the pics to download.

We are also gearing up for snowman day. My kiddos will be doing all things snowman and snow related. I will post about it when we finish but here are a couple of sneak peek freebies... (click to download!)

We will be sequencing how to build a snowman whole class, but they will be sequencing the life of a snowman independently by ordering these cards and writing about the events.

18 word cards to be put into alphabetical order (3, 4 and 5 at a time) with a recording sheet
 Have a happy weekend everyone!
